Howlite is a borate mineral usually found in evaporite deposits within sedimentary basins. The blue color is artificial, achieved by dyeing the naturally white/grey mineral to imitate turquoise.

Primarily used as an affordable substitute for turquoise in fashion jewelry, beadwork, and decorative pocket stones.
Geological facts
Natural howlite is exceptionally porous, which makes it perfect for taking dyes. It is most famously used to create 'Turquenite' or 'Imitation Turquoise'. It was first discovered near Windsor, Nova Scotia, in 1868.
Field identification & locations
Identify in the field by its distinct matrix pattern and relative softness compared to real turquoise. A common test is using a cotton swab with acetone; if the color comes off, it is dyed howlite.
