Formation & geological history

Formed in volcanic fumaroles (vents) where mineral-rich gases escape, cooling to deposit layers of sulfur (yellow/orange), manganese oxides (black), and calcium carbonate. Primarily sourced from West Java, Indonesia.

Uses & applications

Mainly used in lapidary arts for cabochons, jewelry, and metaphysical collecting. Not suitable for heavy industrial use due to its relative softness.

Despite its name, it is not a true jasper (which is silicate-based) but rather a mineraloid conglomerate. The vibrant yellow color is derived from sulfur and potentially toxic arsenic minerals like orpiment.
