Formed through metasomatism (contact metamorphism) involving alkaline syenite intruding into limestone, causing unique chemical alterations. Found almost exclusively in one region of the world.

Geological facts

Charoite was only discovered in the 1940s and was introduced to the wider world in 1978. Its name comes from the Chara River near where it was found in Siberia.

Easily identified by its unique, swirling chatoyant purple and white fibrous patterns. It is found almost exclusively along the Chara River in the Sakha Republic, Siberia, Russia.
