Formed in pegmatites, hydrothermal veins, and metamorphic rocks. Natural citrine derives its yellow color from trace amounts of iron (Fe3+) in the quartz crystal lattice, though heat-treated amethyst is also extremely common.

Geological facts
Natural citrine is quite rare compared to amethyst or clear quartz. Most commercial citrine is created by heat-treating purple amethyst at high temperatures, turning it deep yellow-orange.

Identified by its scratch resistance against steel (Mohs 7), glassy luster, lack of cleavage, and yellow-to-golden tint fading into milky white quartz base. Commonly found in Brazil, Madagascar, Russia, and Zambia.
