Desert Rose clusters resemble petals of a rose flower. The trapped sand grains inside give them their rough texture and sandy brown color, while the crystal blades themselves are composed of translucent gypsum or barite.
Field identification & locations
Identified by its distinctive rosette or flower-like growth structure composed of interlocking tabular mineral blades coated in sand. Common locations include Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Mexico, Australia, and the southwestern United States (Oklahoma, Arizona). Very soft and easily scratched or damaged by water.
