Geological facts

Howlite is extremely porous, which allows it to absorb dye easily. When dyed teal, it is often sold under the trade name 'Turquenite'. It was named after Henry How, a Canadian mineralogist.

Identify by its low hardness compared to real turquoise (which is Mohs 5-6). If the color looks too uniform or concentrated in surface cracks, it is likely dyed howlite. Common locations for original mineral: Nova Scotia (Canada) and California (USA).
