Formed in shallow marine environments from the accumulation of calcium carbonate (shells, skeletons, or chemical precipitate). The specimen appears water-worn, suggesting it was smoothed by river or coastal erosion. The pink hue is due to trace iron oxide.

Uses & applications

Limestone is used extensively in construction, the manufacture of cement, as a soil conditioner in agriculture, and as a flux in steel making. Small tumbled pieces are often used in landscaping.
