Fluorite was the original source of the phenomenon of fluorescence, which was named after the mineral. Some specimens can glow intensely under UV light.

Identified by its relatively low hardness (can be scratched by a knife but not a copper penny) and its distinct cubic or octahedral cleavage. Commonly found in China, Mexico, and the USA.
