Field identification & locations
Look for a smooth, waxy to earthy texture, high hardness (scratches glass, cannot be scratched by a steel pocketknife), and distinct reddish-orange to brown iron staining. Common in stream beds, gravel pits, and sedimentary rock outcrops.
