Formation & geological history
Formed at high altitudes near the base of K2, the world's second-highest peak in Pakistan. The white granite matrix formed igneous activity, while secondary azurite formed later from copper-bearing fluids penetrating micro-fractures.
Uses & applications
Popular as a gemstone, lapidary material for cabochons, polished tumbled stones, beads, and metaphysical crystal collecting.
Geological facts
Despite its trade name 'K2 Jasper', it is not a true jasper (sedimentary chalcedony), but rather a granite composed of quartz, plagioclase feldspar, and muscovite with orbicular blue spots of azurite.
Field identification & locations
Identify by looking for bright blue, ink-like orbicular dots floating inside a white-and-grey speckled granitic host rock. Found primarily in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan.
