Formed from the cooling and crystallization of magma into granite, with later hydrothermal fluids depositing azurite into the fractures and cavities of the granite.

Geological facts

Despite being commonly referred to as K2 Jasper or K2 Granite, it is technically a granite containing azurite, which is a rare combination since azurite typically forms in copper-rich sedimentary or metamorphic environments rather than intrusive igneous rocks.

Field identification & locations

Found almost exclusively near the base of Mount K2 in the Karakoram range in Pakistan. Easily identified by the contrasting bright blue spots against a white and gray granitic background.
