Formed through the accumulation of marine organic debris or chemical precipitation of calcium carbonate in shallow marine environments. The white veins are secondary calcite deposits that filled fractures within the rock during tectonic stress or hydrothermal activity.

Used primarily in the construction industry as aggregate, for making cement, and as a building stone. It is also used as a soil conditioner in agriculture and for flue-gas desulfurization.
