Formation & geological history
While it mimics the look of natural opal, Opalite is a man-made glass (often synthetic opal) created by fusing dolomite and metal oxides in a laboratory. It is designed to simulate the adularescence seen in natural moonstone or opal.

Geological facts
Opalite is often confused with Sea Opal or Girasol Opal. It is unique among synthetics because its blue-to-yellow color change depends on whether the light is passing through it or reflecting off of it.
Field identification & locations
Look for a very uniform milky appearance and the presence of small air bubbles within the material, which distinguish it from natural opal or moonstone. It will appear blue against dark backgrounds and yellowish-peach when held up to the light.
