Formation & geological history
Formed through a two-stage cooling process of basaltic or andesitic lava. Initial cooling occurred slowly underground, allowing larger feldspar crystals to grow, followed by rapid eruption and cooling of the remaining magma into a fine-grained groundmass. Often smoothed into rounded pebbles by river or wave action.
