Formation & geological history
Formed in hydrothermal veins at a variety of temperatures by the precipitation of sulfide and silicate minerals from hot, mineral-rich fluids. It can also occur as an accessory mineral in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks.
Uses & applications
Source of sulfur and sulfuric acid in industry; historical source of sparks for firearms; widely used as a collector specimen and in costume jewelry.

Commonly known as Fool's Gold due to its resemblance to precious metal. Historically used in the 'wheel lock' firearms to ignite gunpowder. It is the most common sulfide mineral found on Earth.
