Formed in pegmatites and hydrothermal veins under high temperatures and pressure. The pink color is caused by microscopic inclusions of a fibrous pink aluminum-borosilicate mineral related to dumortierite.

Geological facts
Rose quartz has been used in jewelry since as early as 700 BC in Assyria. Unlike regular quartz, rose quartz rarely forms distinct, well-defined single crystal faces.
Field identification & locations
Identified by its characteristic soft pink shade, hardness of 7 (scratches glass), glass-like luster, and absence of cleavage. Found abundantly in Brazil, Madagascar, South Africa, and the United States (South Dakota).
