Formation & geological history
Formed through the metamorphism of Precambrian organic-rich sediments. It is approximately 2 billion years old, found primarily in the Karelia region of Russia.
Uses & applications
Used for water purification, as a black pigment in paint, in metallurgy, and widely for metaphysical and collecting purposes.
Geological facts
Shungite is unique because it naturally contains fullerenes (buckyballs), which are spherical carbon molecules. It is often called the 'Miracle Stone' of Karelia.
Field identification & locations
Identify by its matte black appearance that often leaves a black residue (soot) on the hands. Found exclusively in the Zazhogino deposit in Karelia. Collectors look for 'Elite' shungite which is shinier.
