Formed when silica-rich felsic lava cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth to form obsidian glass. Over time, partial devitrification occurs where spherulites of the mineral cristobalite (a silica polymorph) grow within the black glass matrix, creating the distinct 'snowflake' patterns.
