Formation & geological history

Forms in silica-poor igneous rocks such as nepheline syenites and phonolites. It can also occur in contact metamorphic rocks such as marbles. Significant deposits are found in alkaline igneous complexes.

Uses & applications

Used primarily as an ornamental stone, for carvings, as a gemstone in jewelry (beads, cabochons), and as an architectural surfacing material.

Geological facts

Sodalite is a member of the sodalite group and is named for its high sodium content. It is often confused with Lapis Lazuli, but unlike Lapis, Sodalite rarely contains pyrite and it has a lower specific gravity.

Field identification & locations

Identify by its rich blue color and characteristic white veins (calcite). It is commonly found in Bancroft (Ontario, Canada), Namibia, Brazil, and Greenland. Collectors can identify it in the field by its association with nepheline and its blue streak.
