Formed in high-grade metamorphic rocks, hydrothermal veins, or banded iron formations (BIFs). The location near Minas Gerais, Brazil (approx. 20.1°S, 42.0°W) is world-famous for major hematite and iron ore deposits within the Iron Quadrangle (Quadrilátero Ferrífero).

Geological facts
Specular hematite contains tiny mica-like flakes that sparkle brightly under light. Despite its metallic silver-black surface, scraping it against unglazed porcelain leaves a diagnostic reddish-brown streak.
