The visible texture may represent fossil chambers, skeletal ribs, or fractures filled with pale calcite.

Formation & geological history

Most likely formed when marine skeletal material—such as coral, shell, or another carbonate organism—was buried in lime-rich sediment and later lithified into limestone. Groundwater weathering and recrystallization may have altered the original structure. The geological age cannot be determined from the photograph; fossiliferous limestone ranges from Paleozoic to Cenozoic in age.

Uses & applications

Field identification & locations

Identification is uncertain from a single low-magnification image. In the field, test an inconspicuous area with a drop of dilute hydrochloric acid or household vinegar: calcite-rich limestone usually fizzes, especially with acid. Examine the surface with a hand lens for repeated chambers, pores, growth lines, symmetry, or recognizable shell ornamentation. A fresh broken surface, multiple angles, locality information, and an acid reaction would help distinguish fossil limestone from ordinary altered rock or a calcite-veined stone. Common settings include marine sedimentary formations, stream gravels, road cuts, and glacial deposits.
