Physical properties
The specimen is a rounded, weathered cobble with a tan to pink-brown surface, pale gray-white mineral patches, and scattered dark grains. It appears coarse- to medium-grained and granular, although the image is not sharp enough to determine the individual crystals confidently. Typical granite has Mohs hardness of about 6–7 overall, vitreous to dull luster, no dominant cleavage as a whole rock, and interlocking crystals of quartz and feldspar with minor mica or amphibole. The brown coloration is likely surface staining and weathering of iron-bearing minerals. Identification from the photograph is provisional; a close-up of a fresh broken surface would improve confidence.
Formation & geological history
Granite forms when silica-rich magma cools slowly deep within the continental crust, allowing visible crystals to grow. The original rock may be hundreds of millions to more than a billion years old, depending on its source region. The rounded shape indicates later erosion and transport by a stream, wave action, or glacial processes. Surface iron staining and granular breakdown reflect weathering after exposure.

Granite is one of the most abundant continental crustal rocks. Its characteristic light minerals are quartz and feldspar, while dark mica or amphibole commonly forms small black flecks. Pink or tan colors often result from potassium feldspar and iron-oxide weathering. Rounded granite cobbles are common in stream beds, beaches, glacial deposits, and gravel pits.
Field identification & locations
In the field, look for an interlocking crystalline texture with abundant pale quartz and feldspar plus small dark mica or amphibole grains. A fresh surface should be harder than a steel knife and should not fizz with dilute hydrochloric acid, except where it contains weathered carbonate material. The specimen could also be a related granitic rock such as granodiorite or a weathered arkosic sandstone; distinguishing these requires a fresh surface, hand lens, hardness testing, and ideally thin-section or chemical analysis. Common sources include granitic mountain regions worldwide, including the Sierra Nevada, Appalachians, Canadian Shield, Scandinavia, and many other continental terrains.
