Physical properties
The specimen is a rounded, naturally worn pebble with a fine-grained gray, cream, and greenish matrix and irregular reddish-brown patches. The red areas are probably hematite/goethite staining or oxidized volcanic material. Rhyolite typically has a Mohs hardness of about 6–7, a dull to slightly earthy or glassy luster, and no prominent cleavage as a whole rock. Individual feldspar crystals may show cleavage, but they are not clearly visible in this image. Specific gravity is commonly about 2.4–2.7. The texture appears aphanitic to weakly porphyritic, though weathering makes the texture difficult to confirm.
Formation & geological history
Rhyolite forms when silica-rich lava erupts and cools relatively quickly at or near Earth's surface. Its composition is equivalent to granite, but its crystals are much finer because of rapid cooling. The reddish coloration likely developed later through oxidation of iron-bearing minerals during weathering. A precise geological age cannot be determined from a photograph; rhyolite occurs from Archean rocks to very recent volcanic deposits.
Uses & applications
Common rhyolite has limited commercial value but may be used locally as aggregate, road material, riprap, landscaping stone, and occasionally building or decorative stone. Attractive varieties with strong red, pink, green, or flow-banded patterns may be cut or polished as ornamental stone or sold as lapidary rough.

Rhyolite is the volcanic equivalent of granite and is among the most silica-rich common volcanic rocks. Its high silica content makes rhyolitic lava relatively viscous, so it can produce lava domes, ash-flow tuffs, welded tuffs, and explosive volcanic deposits. The specimen could also represent a weathered rhyolitic breccia if the reddish zones are fragments rather than stains.
Field identification & locations
In the field, rhyolite is usually light colored—gray, pink, tan, cream, or reddish—and has a very fine groundmass. Look for tiny quartz or feldspar phenocrysts, flow banding, or welded texture. A fresh broken surface would be more diagnostic than the weathered exterior. A streak test, hardness test, and examination with a hand lens could help distinguish it from quartzite, altered basalt, jasper-bearing volcanic rock, or concrete. The rounded shape indicates transport in a stream, beach, or gravel deposit. Common sources include volcanic regions such as the western United States, Mexico, the Andes, New Zealand, Iceland, and many older continental volcanic belts.
