Physical properties

A rounded, weathered, light-gray to cream specimen with a coarse crystalline texture. The visible pale, blocky grains are consistent with feldspar, while translucent to whitish areas may be quartz. Likely hardness is approximately 6–7 Mohs overall, although weathered surfaces may be softer and friable. Luster is mostly dull on the weathered exterior and vitreous to pearly on fresh mineral surfaces. Crystals are intergrown rather than arranged in a sedimentary layering; feldspar may show cleavage, while quartz lacks cleavage and fractures conchoidally. Estimated specific gravity is about 2.60–2.70.

Formation & geological history

Pegmatite forms when the final, water-rich portion of a granitic magma cools slowly in veins, dikes, or pockets, allowing unusually large crystals to develop. If the specimen is ordinary granite rather than pegmatite, it formed from slowly cooled magma deep within the crust. Its exact geological age cannot be determined from the image; granitic pegmatites occur from Precambrian to recent geological settings. The rounded shape indicates transport and weathering in soil, stream sediment, or glacial/alluvial gravel.

Field identification & locations

In the field, look for interlocking visible crystals, especially creamy or pink feldspar, glassy gray or clear quartz, and shiny flakes of mica. A fresh broken surface is more diagnostic than the weathered exterior. Feldspar commonly exhibits two cleavage directions and is scratched by a steel knife only with difficulty; quartz is harder and should resist a knife. A dilute hydrochloric-acid test can help exclude limestone, though it should be performed cautiously and is not definitive for this specimen. The background pavement and limited view make a human-made aggregate fragment another possibility, so location and a fresh cross-section would be useful. Granitic pegmatites are common in continental shield regions and mountain belts worldwide, including the United States, Canada, Brazil, Madagascar, Norway, India, and Australia.
