Formation & geological history

The metallic-looking patches in this specimen should not by themselves be taken as evidence of a meteorite; terrestrial basalt commonly contains shiny feldspar, pyroxene, magnetite, or weathering products.

Field identification & locations

In the field, basalt is commonly recognized by its dark color, relatively fine grain, high density, and lack of obvious large quartz crystals. A fresh broken surface should be dark gray and may reveal small white plagioclase crystals. It commonly attracts a magnet weakly if magnetite is present, but a magnet test alone is not diagnostic. A streak test, hardness testing, specific-gravity measurement, and examination with a hand lens would help distinguish it from andesite, gabbro, slag, or a meteorite.
