The specimen is a smoothly rounded, polished white pebble with a soft to pearly/vitreous luster and faint internal cleavage or fracture lines. Calcite has a Mohs hardness of 3, perfect rhombohedral cleavage, and a specific gravity of about 2.71. It is commonly white, colorless, cream, or gray. Marble has essentially the same dominant mineral composition but consists of interlocking calcite grains. The image alone cannot distinguish confidently between calcite, white marble, quartz, or a manufactured ceramic object.

Formation & geological history

Calcite forms in sedimentary limestones, hydrothermal veins, caves, and metamorphic marbles. Marble forms when limestone recrystallizes during regional or contact metamorphism. Calcite-bearing rocks range from very ancient Precambrian material to geologically recent deposits; the age cannot be determined from the photograph.

Uses & applications

Calcite and marble are used in cement, lime, aggregate, soil treatment, construction stone, and sculpture. Attractive white calcite and marble pieces are also sold as polished stones, décor, and inexpensive mineral specimens. Calcite is not generally used as a gemstone because its low hardness makes it easy to scratch.

Geological facts

Calcite effervesces noticeably with dilute hydrochloric acid, and sometimes with strong household vinegar if freshly powdered or scratched. It commonly shows rhombohedral cleavage rather than quartz's irregular conchoidal fracture. A polished white piece may also be sold as 'white marble,' 'white calcite,' or occasionally misidentified as quartz.

Field identification & locations

To test it, try scratching an inconspicuous area with a copper coin or steel nail: calcite is easily scratched by a steel nail, while quartz is not. A fresh powdered spot should fizz with dilute hydrochloric acid; vinegar may produce a weaker reaction. Calcite is common worldwide in limestone and marble regions, including Italy, Mexico, the United States, China, and many other countries. Because the image shows only a polished surface and no scale or fresh break, identification is provisional. The smooth, uniformly white appearance could also be tumbled quartz, howlite, or—if it lacks mineral characteristics—ceramic or another manufactured material.
