In the field, yellow calcite is suggested by its yellow color, relatively low hardness, and tendency to scratch with a steel knife while not scratching ordinary glass. A dilute acid test produces vigorous fizzing, though this should be performed only on an inconspicuous area because it damages the polish. Calcite is widespread in carbonate rocks, hydrothermal veins, caves, and marble deposits worldwide, including Mexico, Brazil, the United States, Canada, and parts of Europe.
