Formed in hydrothermal veins and alluvial deposits where quartz crystals containing trace amounts of iron (Fe3+) were exposed to natural irradiation. The rounded, frosted exterior indicates natural stream, river, or ocean wave erosion over extended periods.

Amethyst gets its purple hue from natural gamma radiation acting on trace amounts of iron within the quartz crystal lattice. Stream-rounded 'sea glass' or water-worn amethyst pebbles often have a frosted 'C-shaped' pitted surface pattern due to micro-impacts with other pebbles.
