Formation & geological history

Forms within gas cavities (vesicles) in basaltic volcanic rocks, or within sedimentary rocks, where silica-rich hydrothermal solutions deposit quartz crystals over thousands to millions of years. Irradiation and trace amounts of iron impurities produce the characteristic purple color.
