Formation & geological history

Formed through 'serpentinization,' a low-temperature metamorphic process where ultramafic rocks from the Earth's mantle are hydrated. The white veins are likely calcite or quartz filling fractures created during tectonic activity. Common in the French Alps (Vercors/Drôme region).

Used primarily as decorative stone, for carvings, and occasionally as industrial source for magnesium.

This specimen is highly characteristic of the Alpine Ophiolites. Serpentinite is often called 'the Green Stone of the Alps.'

Look for the waxy luster and soapy feel. It is commonly found in riverbeds in the southeastern France region as water-worn pebbles.
