Chalcedony has a Mohs hardness of about 6.5–7, no distinct cleavage, conchoidal fracture, and a specific gravity near 2.58–2.64. Its microscopic quartz fibers form a cryptocrystalline aggregate rather than visible individual crystals. The blue color can result from microscopic inclusions, defects, or trace minerals. Because the image is somewhat blurred, blue calcite, aquamarine, blue glass, or synthetic material cannot be ruled out visually.

Formation & geological history

Chalcedony forms when silica-rich groundwater fills cavities, fractures, and vesicles in volcanic rocks, where it precipitates gradually as microcrystalline quartz. It may also form as replacement material in sedimentary rocks. Common sources of chalcedony include Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar, India, Turkey, Mexico, Namibia, the United States, and Australia. In the field, test hardness against ordinary glass: genuine chalcedony should generally scratch glass, while glass may not. It commonly shows a waxy appearance, conchoidal fracture, and even translucency. A refractive-index and specific-gravity test, examination under magnification, and a laboratory gem test are recommended. The perfectly uniform pale blue color and very rounded polished form in this image leave open the possibility of blue glass or another manufactured imitation; a photo alone is insufficient for a definitive identification.
