The specimen is a polished or naturally smoothed piece with an angular brecciated pattern of brick-red, pink, cream, gray, black, and dark green material. Jasper has a hardness of approximately 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, a vitreous to dull or waxy luster, no visible cleavage, conchoidal to uneven fracture, and typical specific gravity around 2.55–2.70. The red colors are commonly caused by iron oxides such as hematite; dark green areas may contain chlorite, epidote, or other altered volcanic minerals. Exact identification cannot be confirmed from an image alone.

Formation & geological history

Brecciated jasper forms when preexisting silica-rich rock is fractured, followed by deposition of silica-rich fluids that cement the broken fragments together. Many varieties originate in altered volcanic rocks or hydrothermal environments. The material may be Paleozoic to Cenozoic in age depending on its locality; a precise geological age cannot be assigned from the photograph. The name rainforest jasper is often used commercially for multicolored green, red, and cream jasper, especially material from Australia, although similar-looking rocks occur elsewhere.

Jasper is an opaque variety of chalcedony or microcrystalline quartz rather than a single mineral species. “Brecciated” describes its angular fragment-in-matrix texture. Commercial variety names such as rainforest jasper, Picasso jasper, and brecciated jasper are not always scientifically standardized, and visually similar material may be sold under different names.

Field identification & locations

In the field, look for an opaque, very fine-grained rock with sharply contrasting angular fragments, silica-like hardness, and a smooth waxy or glassy surface when polished. It should not readily scratch with a steel knife, though a quartz crystal or hardened steel may scratch it. A streak test on an inconspicuous area is usually white to colorless, and dilute acid should produce no bubbling. The photographed specimen is most consistent with brecciated jasper, but laboratory confirmation would require tests such as hardness, specific gravity, microscopy, or chemical analysis. Common sources of related material include Australia, Madagascar, India, Brazil, Mexico, and the western United States.
