Formation & geological history

Formed in geothermal active environments, specifically around fumaroles and hot springs in volcanic regions. Found primarily at Mount Papandayan in West Java, Indonesia. Geological age is relatively young, associated with recent volcanic activity.

Uses & applications

Used primarily in lapidary arts to create cabochons for jewelry, as well as being a popular and colorful specimen for mineral collectors.

Geological facts

Despite being commonly called 'Jasper', it is not actually a microcrystalline quartz. The striking yellow and orange colors come from sulfur and arsenic-bearing minerals like realgar and orpiment, which means raw specimens should be handled with care.

Easily identified in hand specimens by its distinct, bold yellow and black bumblebee-like color patterns. Found exclusively in Indonesia associated with volcanic vents.
