Formation & geological history

Formed in the regolith of ultramafic rocks through the weathering or hydrothermal alteration of nickeliferous serpentinite or peridotite. Deposits are often found in oxidized zones as veins or nodules.

Uses & applications

Primarily used as a gemstone for jewelry (cabochons, beads) and as an ornamental stone for carvings. It was historically favored as a decorative architectural stone.

Geological facts

Unlike emerald, which gets its green from chromium/vanadium, chrysoprase gets its color from nickel. It was a favorite gemstone of Frederick the Great of Prussia.

Field identification & locations

Identify by its distinctive waxy luster and apple-green hue. Found in Australia (best quality), Brazil, Germany, and the United States (Arizona/California). Tumbled pieces are common in rock shops.
