Formation & geological history
Formed primarily in hydrothermal veins where it often occurs as a gangue mineral associated with metallic ores; also found in some igneous rocks and limestones.
Uses & applications
Used as a flux in steel making, in the manufacture of opalescent glass, as enamels for cooking utensils, and in the production of hydrofluoric acid. High-quality specimens are used in jewelry and by mineral collectors.
Geological facts
The term 'fluorescence' was coined because fluorite specimens were some of the first substances studied that exhibited it. Pure fluorite is colorless; the green hue comes from impurities or structural defects known as color centers.
Field identification & locations
Identified in the field by its distinct green color, perfect four-directional cleavage, and lower hardness than quartz. It is commonly found in Illinois (USA), Mexico, China, and South Africa.
