Physical properties

The specimen is translucent to semi-translucent, honey-brown to yellow, with a dull-to-waxy luster and a pale, rough outer rind. It appears massive rather than displaying visible crystals and may show conchoidal or irregular fracture. Chalcedony has a Mohs hardness of about 6.5–7, specific gravity around 2.58–2.64, and no distinct cleavage. The white outer material could be quartz/chalcedony, weathered host rock, or a carbonate-rich rind. A glassy scratch test and microscopic examination would help distinguish it from calcite or common glass.

Formation & geological history

Chalcedony forms when silica-rich groundwater fills cavities, fractures, and vesicles in volcanic rocks, often depositing successive layers of microcrystalline quartz. Iron impurities can produce yellow, orange, brown, or reddish colors. Such material may form during volcanic activity or later hydrothermal and weathering processes; its age depends on the host rock and locality and cannot be determined from the image.

Uses & applications

Used for cabochons, beads, carvings, polished stones, and mineral collections. Similar material is also used decoratively as agate or jasper. This rough, apparently common specimen would have little industrial or jewelry value unless it produces attractive, clean translucent sections when cut and polished.

Geological facts

Chalcedony is not a single perfectly uniform mineral in the usual trade sense, but a fine intergrowth of quartz and moganite. The terms agate, carnelian, jasper, and chalcedony overlap in the marketplace: banding generally favors agate, red-orange material is commonly called carnelian, and opaque iron-rich material is often sold as jasper.

Field identification & locations

Common sources include volcanic regions of Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar, India, Mexico, Turkey, Namibia, and the western United States. In the field, chalcedony is typically lighter in weight than metallic minerals, has a smooth waxy appearance, and can scratch ordinary window glass. It does not usually react strongly with dilute hydrochloric acid, unlike calcite. A steel knife should not scratch genuine chalcedony, although testing should be done only on an inconspicuous area. The image does not show diagnostic banding or crystal form, so yellow jasper, calcite, opal, or another silica-rich material remain possible alternatives.
