Geological facts
Labradorite was first discovered in Paul Island near Illuak, Labrador, in Canada in 1770, which is where its name originates. Inuit legends claim that the Northern Lights were trapped inside the rocks along the coast of Labrador until a brave warrior freed most of them with a spear strike.
Field identification & locations
Readily identified by its dark, unassuming appearance from certain angles that abruptly transforms into vibrant, metallic flashes of rainbow colors when turned in the light. Major sources include Canada, Madagascar, Finland, Australia, and Russia.
