Formation & geological history
Formed in volcanic cavities and hydrothermal veins within basaltic lavas. The unique blue color is caused by the substitution of copper for calcium in the pectolite structure. It is found almost exclusively in the Dominican Republic.

Used primarily in high-end jewelry, carvings, and as a collector's gemstone.
Geological facts
Larimar was discovered in 1974 by a local named Norman Rilling and a Peace Corps volunteer named Miguel Mendez. They named it by combining 'Larissa' (Mendez's daughter's name) with 'Mar' (the Spanish word for sea).
Field identification & locations
Easily identified by its unique wave-like patterns and oceanic blue colors resembling light shimmering through Caribbean water. Found exclusively in the Barahona province of the Dominican Republic.
