Formation & geological history

Natural topaz is an orthosilicate mineral of aluminum and fluorine that forms in pegmatites and high-temperature hydrothermal veins. Mystic topaz is created by applying a very thin, artificial metallic vapor deposition coating (often titanium or similar metals) onto the pavilion of a colorless faceted topaz to produce a rainbow optical interference effect.

Used exclusively in jewelry, such as rings, pendants, and earrings, due to its striking multicolored appearance.

Mystic topaz first appeared on the gemstone market around 1998. The rainbow effect is a surface coating rather than an inherent property of the crystal, meaning the coating can be damaged by harsh chemicals, heat, or abrasive polishing.

Field identification & locations

Identified by its vivid, shifting rainbow colors reminiscent of oil on water, mounted on a base or faceted stone. Unlike natural pleochroic gems like alexandrite, the color play is due to thin-film interference on the surface.
