Physical properties

The specimen is a dark gray-green, fine-grained, foliated rock with a subtle silky sheen and thin, closely spaced planar layers. It appears dense and tough, with uneven to planar fracture and minor rusty weathering. Typical phyllite hardness is about 2–4 on the Mohs scale, specific gravity about 2.7–2.9, and luster ranges from dull to silky or slightly metallic on foliation surfaces. The rock is composed of microscopic aligned mica and chlorite crystals, so individual crystals are difficult to see. A definitive distinction from slate or greenstone would require a fresh break, hand lens, hardness testing, and possibly thin-section or X-ray analysis.

Formation & geological history

Phyllite forms when shale or mudstone is subjected to low- to moderate-grade regional metamorphism during mountain building. Compaction, heat, and directed pressure recrystallize clay minerals into aligned mica and chlorite, producing foliation. It can form during many geological periods; the age of this hand specimen cannot be determined from the image. If the green color reflects chlorite or altered mafic minerals, it may represent a chlorite-rich phyllite or weakly metamorphosed basaltic rock.

Uses & applications

Commonly used as crushed stone, road aggregate, landscaping stone, and occasionally as roofing, wall, or paving material when it splits suitably. Attractive polished or strongly foliated pieces may be used as decorative stone, but ordinary hand specimens generally have limited commercial value.

Geological facts

Phyllite is intermediate in metamorphic grade between slate and schist. Its characteristic silky sheen comes from microscopic mica crystals that have grown and aligned during metamorphism. Green-gray phyllite can be confused with slate, chlorite schist, metabasalt, serpentinite, or weathered fine-grained igneous rock.

Field identification & locations

In the field, look for persistent planar foliation, a fine-grained texture, and a silky sheen rather than visible large mica flakes. Slate tends to split into very flat, dull sheets, while phyllite commonly has a more crinkled or satiny surface; schist has clearly visible mica flakes. A steel nail may scratch some phyllite, but hardness varies. It is not strongly diagnostic from color alone. Common occurrences include metamorphic belts and ancient mountain ranges, including parts of the Appalachians, New England, the Rocky Mountains, the Alps, and similar orogenic regions worldwide.
