Geological facts
Pink tourmaline is one of October's birthstones. It was highly prized by the last Empress of China, Dowager Tz'u Hsi, who imported massive quantities from California in the early 1900s.
Field identification & locations
Identified by its distinctive pink color, strong pleochroism (showing different colors from different angles), and typical striations along the length of the crystal when rough. Found globally, notably in Brazil, Madagascar, Afghanistan, and California.
