Formation & geological history
Forms primarily in hydrothermal veins and igneous pegmatites. The pink color is attributed to microscopic inclusions of a fibrous pink borosilicate mineral similar to dumortierite.
Uses & applications
Extensively used in lapidary work for cabochons, beads, carvings, and polished spheres. Also popular as a collector's specimen and in metaphysical practices.
Geological facts
Unlike other quartz varieties which form clear, distinct crystals, rose quartz usually occurs in large, shapeless masses. Rare individual crystals are actually known as 'Pink Quartz' and are genetically different.
Field identification & locations
Identify in the field by its distinct pink hue, lack of cleavage, and ability to scratch glass. Widely found in Brazil, Madagascar, South Dakota (USA), and India.
