Formation & geological history
Formed in hydrothermal veins and pegmatites through the cooling of silica-rich magma or aqueous fluids, often containing trace amounts of titanium, iron, or manganese which provide the pink hue.
Uses & applications
Widely used in jewelry (beads, cabochons), ornamental carvings, crystal healing practices, and as a decorative landscaping stone.
Geological facts
Unlike other varieties of quartz that form large crystals, rose quartz usually occurs in massive form; single crystals are extremely rare. The color is thought to be caused by microscopic inclusions of a pink variety of the mineral dumortierite.
Field identification & locations
Identify by its characteristic pink color and glass-like fracture. Common in Brazil, Madagascar, South Africa, and the United States (South Dakota). To find in the field, look for milky pink masses in pegmatite outcrops.
