Formation & geological history
Formed in silica-poor igneous rocks such as nepheline syenites, phonolites, and associated pegmatites. It crystallizes during the late stage of magmatic differentiation.

Popularly used in gemstone jewelry (beaded bracelets, cabochons, pendants), ornamental carvings, lapidary artwork, and as a decorative stone.
Geological facts
Sodalite was first discovered in Greenland in 1811, but became widely popular as an ornamental stone after vast deposits were discovered in Ontario, Canada, during a royal visit in 1891 (often called 'Princess Blue').
Field identification & locations
Identified by its rich blue color and frequent white calcite inclusions. Unlike lapis lazuli, sodalite rarely contains yellow pyrite specks. Found majorly in Canada, Brazil, Namibia, Greenland, and Russia.
