Formation & geological history

Formed through the replacement of fibrous asbestos (crocidolite) minerals with silica (quartz), a process known as pseudomorphism. Most deposits are found in Precambrian iron formations.

Geological facts

The unique shimmer (chatoyancy) is caused by the parallel orientation of the quartz fibers and altered amphibole fibers. When the minerals are replaced but remain blue, it is called Hawk's Eye.

Field identification & locations

Identify in the field by its distinct golden-brown banding and silky chatoyant light reflections when rotated. Commonly found in South Africa, Australia, and Brazil.
