Formation & geological history

Formed through the pseudomorphism of crocidolite (blue asbestos) by silica. The original fibrous structure is replaced by quartz while retaining the fibrous shape, usually in iron-rich metamorphic environments.

Uses & applications

Primarily used as a gemstone for jewelry (cabochons, beads), decorative carvings, and as a popular specimen for crystal healing and mineral collectors.

Geological facts

It is famous for its chatoyancy, or 'cat's-eye' effect. When it has not been oxidized by iron, it remains blue and is known as Hawk's Eye.

Field identification & locations

Identify by its distinct golden-yellow bands and the way light reflects off the fibrous surface (chatoyancy). Major deposits are found in South Africa, Western Australia, and India.
