Formed through hydrothermal alteration (metamorphism) of granite, where hot fluids alter plagioclase feldspar into epidote, replacing it with green patches while leaving pink orthoclase and clear quartz intact.

Geological facts
Unakite was first discovered in the Unaka Mountains of North Carolina, which is how it got its name. It is commonly found in glacial drift pebbles and cobbles.
