Formed through the hydrothermal alteration of granite, where plagioclase feldspar is replaced by epidote. Usually associated with Proterozoic crystalline basement rocks.

Commonly used as a decorative stone for lapidary work, including cabochons, beads, and carvings. Also used as an architectural stone.
Geological facts
Named after the Unaka Range in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina/Tennessee where it was first discovered. It is the state rock of Virginia.
Field identification & locations
Identify by its unique pistachio-green (epidote) and pink-to-peach (orthoclase feldspar) mottled appearance. Common in the Appalachian Mountains and as glacial float in the Great Lakes region.
