Formation & geological history

Formed by hydrothermal alteration (metasomatism) of granite, where original plagioclase feldspar is replaced by green epidote. Often found in association with continental collision zones and ancient orogenic belts.

Uses & applications

Used primarily as a decorative stone for cabochons, beads, spheres, carved items, and tumbled stones in jewelry and lapidary arts.

Geological facts

First discovered in the Unaka Mountains of North Carolina, from which it derives its name. The striking contrast of pink and green makes it a favorite for amateur lapidary work.

Easily identified in the field by its distinct and vibrant combination of pink orthoclase feldspar and green epidote. Commonly found as pebbles in glacial drift or river gravels originating from granitic terrains.
