Formation & geological history

Formed by the hydrothermal alteration (metasomatism) of granite, where hot fluids alter the original minerals (plagioclase feldspar is replaced by epidote). Found globally, often in glacial drift or river pebbles eroded from granitic mountain ranges.

Uses & applications

Used primarily as a decorative stone for cabochons, beads, spheres, tumbled stones, and architectural tiles.

Geological facts

Unakite was first discovered in the Unakas Mountains of North Carolina, from which it derives its name. It is sometimes referred to as epidotized granite.

Easily identified in the field by its distinct, striking color combination of pistachio green and salmon pink. Common locations include the Blue Ridge Mountains in the US, South Africa, Brazil, and China.
